Texas Stars name Jeff Pyle as new coach.

Today the Texas Stars named Jeff Pyle as their new coach. Joe Nieuwendyk, Les Jackson and Scott White decided on Jeff Pyle as the new coach.

Both the Texas Stars and Dallas Stars will be playing the same system now, which wasn't the case the past two years.
Pyle a native of Minneapolis, coached the past eight seasons in the ECHL where his teams had impressive special teams numbers and his teams tend to play a physical style.

Los Angeles Kings sign Simon Gagne

Los Angeles Kings signed Simon Gagne to a two year deal worth $7 million. $3.5 million per year cap hit.

One of the best free agent signings over the past two days. Gagne will re-unite with Mike Richards on the Kings probable second line. While, injuries are a concern with Gagne, he was still a point per game player down the stretch for the Lightning.

It might take Gagne a while to get adjusted to the Kings, but after that time he'll be producing at a point per game pace. Provided no serious injury such as a concussion.

While, the Kings have improved this off-season, I don't see them finishing any higher then five in the Western Conference. They still lack offense talent at the forward position and Terry Murray's coaching style doesn't work for the playoffs. San Jose, Detroit, Chicago and Vancouver have much better depth, St Louis is another team to keep a eye on.

The Stars are a better defensively team at the forrward position and much better on the penatly kill, but they still lack one top six forward. Nieuwendyk's comments a few days ago indicated Steve Ott would play in the top six, that's not a good move. Ott for me wouldn't be a good fit with Benn and Eriksson.

Overall the Stars drafted a lot of players with high upside a few are long term prospects such as Alex LePore and Emil Molin, it looks like a really good draft right now. It's now up to the players and organization to develop the talent. Draft Grade as of now a A.

With the 14th pick the Dallas Stars selected Jamie Oleksiak in the first round.

Oleksiak is 6'7 and weighs 244 pounds. He shots left, he played last season with Northeastern University he had four goals and nine assists. Oleksiak has huge upside, how good will depend if his offense develops. Oleksiak is a very good skater for someone of his size, he needs to improve his offense and becoming a bit more physical. His passing is said to be good, though his offense numbers didn't reflect it that much.

Oleksiak might end up playing next season in the Ontario Hockey League for the Saginaw Spirit.

It was a very good pick for the Stars, now they just need to develop Oleksiak.

On day two, which starts Saturday morning at 10 am, the Stars have 5 picks, the lone exception is a third rounder. The Stars could look to trade down.

Jerrard has coached various Stars prospects down in Iowa and then in Cedar Park, Texas. Such as Nicklas Grossman and Mark Fistric to name a couple. Paul Jerrard played for the Minnesota North Stars for a few games.

Some of these players I don't want the Stars to draft, but they are some players I know the Stars have spend some time with, now will they take any of them? I'm not sure. The first round pick is wide open, for round two is fairly wide open. Joel Armia, is unlikely to be available, but he's a pure goal scorer. He is ranked anywhere from 10 to 18 on rankings, a lot of various opinions in this years draft.

I absolutely don't want the Stars to draft Tyler Biggs or Brandon Saad at all in round one. Mark McNeil and Nathan Beaulieu wouldn't be the best of picks at the 14 spot. McNeil is someone the Stars probably could take at #14, Beaulieu seems like a good nhl prospect, but I don't think the Stars would be the best fit for him.

Johas Brodin is a very interesting prospect, he has the upside to become a first pairing defenseman, but he's also a safe kind of pick and safe is death. Mark Scheifele is a wild card, he has the upside to definitely be a number one center, it's just how he improves is the situation, when compared to Mark McNeil for example, Scheifele has the better upside.

McNeil probably at best projects as a second line center. Scheifele was playing on a really poor team, he has great hockey sense which is extremely important. I'd be happy with any of Mark Scheifele, Joel Armia or Jonas Brodin in the first round. If all three happened to be gone, then trade down is probably the best option, which the Stars would like to add some more draft picks. Jamie Oleksiak is a difficult player to project, it's not known about his offense upside, but he certainly could be a franchise defenseman if his offense develops, otherwise he's a Hal Gill type of player. He could be another interesting option, if the team doesn't trade down.

It was a boring game, but the Stars at least controlled the play as they should against a team, which won't be making the playoffs. The powerplay still couldn't get on track. Scott Glennie's junior career ended Monday Night and now he'll be joining the Cedar Park Stars.

Glennie started off the season slow, but after Gary Roberts visited him in December, Glennie's came took off and he became the player he should be.

On the regular season Glennie played in seventy games scoring thirty-five goals and having fifty- six assists. In the playoffs Glennie's team lost in six games, Glennie had three goals and seven assists.

The Stars played better for the first two periods, then come the third period the Ducks were the better team. The Stars decided to sit back and wait for the Ducks to attack. They're all games the team can win and if the Stars can't win all four of those games then they don't deserve to make the playoffs.

Game Summary
Stars started out slow in the first period, but picked up the pace in the second period after Vishnovsky scored to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. The Stars need to come out and play with that kind of pace to start games, not wait until they're down. Alex Goligoski tied the game at one on the powerplay with a rocket of a shot past Ray Emery's glove. Then in the third period the Stars took a 2-1 lead on a Loui Eriksson goal, the team proceeds to blow it 11 seconds later, then the Stars took a 3-2 lead with over 6 minutes remaining, which the Stars blew the lead with 7 seconds left in regulation. The team lost in overtime on a 2 on 1.

Kari Lehtonen looks tired, he needs to sit against the Nashville Predators, but that isn't going to happen. The Stars have to defeat the Predators on Saturday, hopefully in regulation, otherwise doubts will start lingering if this team is going to make the playoffs or not.

After the first period, the Stars outplayed the Flyers, but ended up falling in the shootout. It was a much better effort against the Flyers then in the earlier meeting during the season, but it still ended up in a loss. Game Summary.
Stars took advantage of a Chicago Blackhawks team which played poorily. I'm surprised how well the Stars played at times without Loui Eriksson in the lineup. The Stars as a team were solid defensively, but unlike the other three games against Chicago this season, the game wasn't that exciting to watch. Ott scored on a breakaway, Benn score on a 2 on 1 and Morrow's goal was also on a odd man rush. Chicago put in Turco who played fairly well in the second period, before in the third period reverting to typical Turco.

Not as big of a game on Saturday, but still important as the Stars take on the Philadelphia Flyers. Kari Lehtonen has never defeated the Flyers and with Lehtonen needing some rest, it's time to finally start Raycroft.

Game Summary
The Stars played pretty well the first period and the first six minutes of the second period, but mistakes started happening. Douglas Murray hit Loui Eriksson with a hit that is legal this season, but next season it will be illegal. Eriksson left the game and did not sure, it's a possible concussion. Hopefully it's not a concussion, but Eriksson appeared to be dazed. Later in the game Douglas Murray elbowed Tomas Vincour in the head, no penalty, not that a powerplay would've made a difference. Dany Heatley threw a cheap elbow at Steve Ott's head late in the game, which Heatley received a penatly, but not that the Stars powerplay could take advantage of it.

The Stars just can't win any puck battles on the powerplay, they had plenty of chances to tie the game, before the Sharks scored two empty net shorthanded goals. The Stars had a 2-0 lead in the game, they couldn't then bury the tired team. They let the Sharks back in it. Then early in the third, the Stars made two huge defensive mistakes, the Sharks scored on both chances to take a 4-2 lead. Jeff Woywitka with a awful turnover, then a odd man rush, off a poor play, which lead to the Sharks two early third period goals. The Stars scored a powerplay goal, where the team won a couple puck battles, but that was the only rare time in the game.

Injury updates tomorrow will be key Adam Burish, Loui Eriksson, Tomas Vincour and Steve Ott. Hopefully Burish can return for the next game. Loui Eriksson I extremely doubt will be available, Vincour and Ott will need to wait for more info tomorrow.

The Stars couldn't generate many quality scoring chances, they couldn't force a way into the middle of the ice so the majority of the Stars shots were from bad angles so Jonathan Quick had a fairly easy time in net for the Kings. The Stars powerplay couldn't win many puck battles like usual, This team is going to have to start winning the puck battles on the powerplay, especially if they plan on doing anything when the playoffs start.
Loui Eriksson had a great pass to set up Brad Richards on a breakaway for the Stars firs to goal. About twenty seconds after the Stars tied the game at two, the Kings re-took the lead with 21 second left in the third.

Game Summary
The Stars played good, but weren't tested that much by a Wild team playing on back to back nights and missing a couple key players. They were trying to get a second goal for awhile, then they finally coverted on it then the floodgates opened and they added two more quick goals to bury the Wild. It was nice to have a easy game before a big game against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. I still didn't like the decision to start Kari Lehtonen again, even though he got the shutout, he didn't face that many shots at least. Though I see the point in riding him while he's hot, but he does need a couple games off before the playoffs start so he's not over worked.

The Stars struggled vastly in their own zone in the first period, Calgary Flames were playing really aggressive. Then in the second and third periods the Stars were the better team. Calgary Flames jumped out a 3-0 lead, Jamie Benn added a late first period goal on the powerplay. The Stars created numerous scoring chances in the second, but only scored one goal. Then in the third period same story, the Stars created a lot of scoring chances, but only could convert on one of them. They need to work on finishing the scoring chances better. The Stars had a 3 on 1 in overtime, but didn't convert, ended up losing in the shootout. Brad Richards was rusty in his return, which isn't a surprise. I certainly hope the team finally decides to start Andrew Raycroft on Friday, it makes a lot of sense. Raycroft shutout the Wild earlier this season, the Wild are coming in playing on back to back nights and most importantly of all Lehtonen needs the rest.

Game Summary
Another come from behind win for the Stars, it was the Stars ninth come from behind win on the season. On the game winning goal, Goligoski made a great backhand pass to Ribeiro, who ended up making a wonderful pass to Morrow for the game winning goal. Brendan Morrow, Mike Ribeiro, Alex Goligoski and Jamie Benn had great games. Kari Lehtonen was showing some signs of fatigue during the game. The Stars will need to give him a couple days off, otherwise he'll end up being worn out by the time the playoffs start. Brad Richards is expected to return during the seven game homestand which begins on Wednesday against the Calgary Flames. It's amazing how much of a difference Alex Goligoski has made, Goligoski has certainly improved a lot as well from his time in college to where he is now at the NHL level.

The Stars were the better team tonight and that's the reason they won. The Stars need to give Kari Lehtonen a game off soon, hopefully Monday's game because the Stars haven't played well in Los Angeles. It also would be a good decision also to start Raycroft at home against the Minnesota Wild on Friday as it's one of the few non divisional games left. The team can't over work Lehtonen. Yeah Raycroft hasn't played great in either of his last two starts, but the team in front of him struggled. Anyway on to tonight's game.

The Stars controlled the game in the third, they need to keep doing that they'll have a lot of success moving forward. Jamie Benn, Alex Goligoski and Tom Wandell were the Stars best players in the game. Tom Wandell is creating more scoring chances, his offense game is slowly developing now he needs to work on finishing those chances. This win was huge, so no matter what happens in Los Angeles the Stars picked up at the very least five points on the road trip.

Stars were awful in the first period, they dominated the second, they sat on the lead so they blew the two goal lead they developed and lost in OT. Not a surprise result, that's what happens when you play not to lose and sit on a lead. Positives when the Stars were playing they showed how good they could be, but when you only outplay the opponent in one of the periods, you're not going to win many games. On the Stars first goal Alex Goligoski made a great pass to Jamie Benn. Goligoski is really impressive offensively and is good defensively. Jamie Benn was the Stars best forward again, which is becoming a common theme.

Kari Lehtonen struggled in this game, hopefully he doesn't play tomorrow in San Jose. He needs a game off, plus if he plays every remaining game or almost every remaining game he will be done by the time the playoffs start.

The Stars outplayed the Coyotes for the first two periods, but only were up 1-0, they could've easily had 4 or 5 goals. Just couldn't finish them, the Coyotes came out strong early in the third, then after awhile the Stars eventually scored to take a 2-0 lead, but after that it was all Coyotes. The Coyotes took advantage of a couple mistakes to tie the game, after the Coyotes tied the game with 37 seconds left, Ribeiro ended up drawing a powerplay with 13 seconds left. Then great work by Morrow and Ribeiro to win a puck battle to get the puck to Loui Eriksson who made a nice pass to Jamie Benn to score the game winning goal with five seconds left.

The Stars need to be much better at finishing the scoring chances in the upcoming games, they can't let teams hang around. Need to finish the other teams off when you have the chance you can't let them back into the game.

Late in the third period the Stars actually could win a couple puck battles on the powerplay the first one they couldn't finish on, but on the second one on a perfect pass from Alex Goligoski to Loui Eriksson's stick the Stars scored the game winning goal. Most importantly they won the game in regulation. Earlier in the period Goligoski just shot the puck on net and it went in off of a lucky bounce. The Stars struggled in the second period.

As good as Alex Goligoski was in the third period, Jamie Benn was the Stars best player in the game and he should've scored a couple goals in the game, but it's not all just scoring. Benn is playing great in all three zones, eventually when his offense starts to develop again he's going to be one of the best players in the league.

On another positive note, Brad Richards skated again. Going to be a tough decision to make on Monday if he Stars should keep Richards, trade him or play it out. Richards wants to say and the Stars want to re-sign him long term so it will be really interesting that happens on Monday. There's even speculation the Stars made a contract offer to Richards, but I'm not sure of the details.

Game Summary
Kari Lehtonen was great tonight, the Stars played better defensively as well and the Stars finished the scoring chances. The Stars first goal was a easy tap in for Ribeiro, the second one was on a breakway short handed by Eriksson and Krys Barch scored on a really really weak goal. Alex Goligoski made a nice pass out of the zone, which lead to the empty netter. The Stars need to take his momentum into the next game against the Nashville Predators and finally start another winning streak.

Brad Richards skated on Thursday he's not expected to play on Saturday, but could return next week.

Mark Fistric or Nicklas Grossman of current roster defenseman are the best fits with Goligoski.

Calgary Flames dominated the first period, Stars were the better team in the second period, but ended up scoring two goals off of lucky bounces. Then in the third period a couple poor shifts cost the Stars the game. It's not surprising as the team is really struggling, they did play much better then last night, but the team is still making too many mistakes and getting outplayed in the first period. The Stars wasted a great game by Kari Lehtonen. Columbus goalie Steve Mason did make some good saves, but the Stars were outplayed again. This can't happen every game if this team wants to make the playoffs, now the Stars have a three game road trip. Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. The Stars are 3-0 against the Oilers, but winless against the Flames and Vancouver. Nicklas Grossman left the game with a injury, so if he's out, hopefully Niskanen plays with Fistric, they play well together. No matter what the Stars team needs to show up and play a entire game, get the powerplay working, or they're not making the playoffs. March is the key month, since almost every game is against the Pacific division, so the Stars will need to be clicking entering that stretch.

Game Summary
Chicago Blackhawks played very good for the first 30 minutes of the game, then the Stars played woke up. Marty Turco allowed a very very soft goal to Stephane Robidas one that shouldn't have went in, but somehow did. the Stars scored with 4 seconds left in the second to make a one goal game. Then the Stars tied the game in the first minute of the third period, just classic Turco. The Stars went 3 for 3 in the shootout, it's sad how much Turco has declined, he needs to retire. It was a huge comeback for the Stars, hopefully this is one of those comebacks which turns things around the Stars need to start winning games and picking up points. Up next is Columbus on Sunday hopefully the Stars can take the momentum into that game.

The Stars came out played fairly well, then struggled. Tomas Vincour played well in his NHL

next game, IMO. Another change I'd make is putting Mark Fistric with Matt Niskanen, they

play well together, but I doubt they'll scratch Jeff Woywitka and put Skrastins with Trevor
