Playoff Predictions for 2011-2012 Season
East
1. Boston
2. Philadelphia
3. Washington
4. Pittsburgh
5. New York Rangers
6. Buffalo
7. New Jersey
8. Montreal
Tough at the bottom, I could even see Ottawa or the Leafs make the final spot over Montreal. Tampa's team it will depend upon the goaltending and team defense if they make the playoffs.
West
1. Vancouver
2. Detroit
3. San Jose
4. Chicago
5. Nashville
6. Los Angeles
7. Anaheim
8. St Louis
Also in the Mix Minnesota, Colorado and Calgary.
Dallas will likely be in the mix, but I can't see them winning a playoff spot.
Los Angeles improved by adding Mike Richards, but they've declined in ability to win puck battles, which is key come playoff time. Losing Ryan Smyth, Wayne Simmonds, Handzus and Alex Ponikarovsky. Now there's still time left in the off-season for them to improve on that, but the Kings also lack scoring talent on the wings. Gagne will almost certainly miss some time with some sort of injury, but the Kings lack depth to replace him, plus they're pretty close to the cap.

Texas Stars name Jeff Pyle as new coach.
Today the Texas Stars named Jeff Pyle as their new coach. Joe Nieuwendyk, Les Jackson and Scott White decided on Jeff Pyle as the new coach.
Both the Texas Stars and Dallas Stars will be playing the same system now, which wasn't the case the past two years.
Pyle a native of Minneapolis, coached the past eight seasons in the ECHL where his teams had impressive special teams numbers and his teams tend to play a physical style.

Dallas Stars sign Eric Godard
Dallas Stars signed Eric Godard to a two year deal.
The first year is a two way contract and the second year is a one way deal. It's a bit of a strange structure, but he might be left in the minors for next season and become Krys Barch's replacement the following year or the team could go with 14 forwards.

A interesting trade for both sides, Sharks save $2.5 million per year on the cap for the next three seasons, while the Wild gain a goal scorer to play with Mikko Koivu.

Los Angeles Kings sign Simon Gagne
Los Angeles Kings signed Simon Gagne to a two year deal worth $7 million. $3.5 million per year cap hit.
One of the best free agent signings over the past two days. Gagne will re-unite with Mike Richards on the Kings probable second line. While, injuries are a concern with Gagne, he was still a point per game player down the stretch for the Lightning.
It might take Gagne a while to get adjusted to the Kings, but after that time he'll be producing at a point per game pace. Provided no serious injury such as a concussion.

While, the Kings have improved this off-season, I don't see them finishing any higher then five in the Western Conference. They still lack offense talent at the forward position and Terry Murray's coaching style doesn't work for the playoffs. San Jose, Detroit, Chicago and Vancouver have much better depth, St Louis is another team to keep a eye on.

July First Dallas Stars signings
Dallas Stars signings
Decided to wait to post the signings, since none of the signings were major.
Left Wing/Center Vern Fiddler. 3 years $5.4 million total.
A very good penalty killer who is excellent on faceoffs.
Defenseman Adam Pardy 2 years $4 million total. 2 million per year cap hit
Solid defenseman, will battle with Mark Fistric for a third pairing spot.
Right Wing Radek Dvorak 1 year $1.5 million
Strong penatly killer and a right shot.
Center Jake Dowell 1 year $800,000
Another strong penatly killer, similar to Adam Burish.
Right Wing Michael Ryder 2 years $7 million.$ 3.5 million cap hit
Inconsistent goal scorer, had success with Mike Ribeiro in Montreal.
Sheldon Souray 1 year $1.65 million
His shot will help out on the powerplay, but reports fom last year said he couldn't keep up with the play in the AHL
For the minors.
Defenseman Jordie Benn
Center Ryan Garbutt
Overview of today's signings.
The Stars are a better defensively team at the forrward position and much better on the penatly kill, but they still lack one top six forward. Nieuwendyk's comments a few days ago indicated Steve Ott would play in the top six, that's not a good move. Ott for me wouldn't be a good fit with Benn and Eriksson.

2011 Dallas Stars Draft Review
Dallas Stars Draft Review
Link to scouting reports.
First Round 14th Overall
Defenseman Jamie Oleksiak Northeastern NCAA 6'7 244 Left Shot.
Probably will play in the Ontario Hockey League next season for Saginaw.
Second Round 44th Overall
Right Wing Brett Ritchie Sarnia OHL 6'3 210 Right Shot
Stars scout Jimmy Johnston on Ritchie:
“Brett is a big strong winger. He has good hands, shoots the puck well and goes to the net. He has a lot of upside; he will dig in at the walls and works hard.”
Fourth Round 105th Overall
Center Emil Molin Brynas Juniors Sweden 6'0 170 Left Shot
Stars Swedish scout Rickard Oquist:
“Emil is a skilled creative forward who can play center and wing. He is a good two-way player who plays responsibly on defense. He’s not physically there yet but will get there and he has very good upside. He’s a smart player and is very good at setting up his teammates.”
Fifth Round 135 Overall
Defenseman Troy Vance Victoriaville QMJHL 6'5 210 Right Shot
Stars Quebec scout Alex LePore on Troy Vance:
“Troy is a big puck-moving D-man with good poise. He is a good skater for his size and probably will play with the first power play unit nest season. He has a ton of upside because he is still learning the position in the Quebec league.”
Sixth Round 165th Overall
Right Wing Matej Stransky Saskatoon WHL 6'2 193 Right Shot
Stars scout Dennis Holland on Matej Stransky of the Czech Republic:
“Matej has great hands. He is very effective below the (face-off) dots, offensively. He’s a skilled player, a big guy at 6-3 who needs to fill out. We think he will be a difficult guy to deal with for defenses.”
Seventh Round 195th Overall
Defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka Ilves SM-Liiga 6'3 191 Left Shot
Stars Director of European Scouting Kari Takko on Jokipakka:
“Jyrki is a 6-3 defenseman who can skate with good skill. He’s just getting his feet wet, as he is a late bloomer. He played at the World Juniors Under-18 for Finland.”
Overall the Stars drafted a lot of players with high upside a few are long term prospects such as Alex LePore and Emil Molin, it looks like a really good draft right now. It's now up to the players and organization to develop the talent. Draft Grade as of now a A.

Dallas Stars select Jamie Oleksiak
With the 14th pick the Dallas Stars selected Jamie Oleksiak in the first round.
Oleksiak is 6'7 and weighs 244 pounds. He shots left, he played last season with Northeastern University he had four goals and nine assists. Oleksiak has huge upside, how good will depend if his offense develops. Oleksiak is a very good skater for someone of his size, he needs to improve his offense and becoming a bit more physical. His passing is said to be good, though his offense numbers didn't reflect it that much.
Oleksiak might end up playing next season in the Ontario Hockey League for the Saginaw Spirit.
It was a very good pick for the Stars, now they just need to develop Oleksiak.
On day two, which starts Saturday morning at 10 am, the Stars have 5 picks, the lone exception is a third rounder. The Stars could look to trade down.

Some of these players I don't want the Stars to draft, but they are some players I know the Stars have spend some time with, now will they take any of them? I'm not sure. The first round pick is wide open, for round two is fairly wide open. Joel Armia, is unlikely to be available, but he's a pure goal scorer. He is ranked anywhere from 10 to 18 on rankings, a lot of various opinions in this years draft.
I absolutely don't want the Stars to draft Tyler Biggs or Brandon Saad at all in round one. Mark McNeil and Nathan Beaulieu wouldn't be the best of picks at the 14 spot. McNeil is someone the Stars probably could take at #14, Beaulieu seems like a good nhl prospect, but I don't think the Stars would be the best fit for him.
Johas Brodin is a very interesting prospect, he has the upside to become a first pairing defenseman, but he's also a safe kind of pick and safe is death. Mark Scheifele is a wild card, he has the upside to definitely be a number one center, it's just how he improves is the situation, when compared to Mark McNeil for example, Scheifele has the better upside.
McNeil probably at best projects as a second line center. Scheifele was playing on a really poor team, he has great hockey sense which is extremely important. I'd be happy with any of Mark Scheifele, Joel Armia or Jonas Brodin in the first round. If all three happened to be gone, then trade down is probably the best option, which the Stars would like to add some more draft picks. Jamie Oleksiak is a difficult player to project, it's not known about his offense upside, but he certainly could be a franchise defenseman if his offense develops, otherwise he's a Hal Gill type of player. He could be another interesting option, if the team doesn't trade down.

Calgary Flames Robyn Regehr on the move?
According to TSN, Calgary Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr was asked to waive his no movement clause so he can be traded to the Buffalo Sabres.
If it happens, it's nice Buffalo is spending some money, but it's expected after the Sabres now have a new owner. The Sabres are expected to make a big run at Brad Richards in free agency.

Philadelphia Flyers trade Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings
Philadelphia Flyers trade Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a second round pick.
The Flyers are creating a younger, cheaper team and it gives them the cap space to sign Ilya Bryzgalov and improve their team in other ways.
For the Los Angeles Kings, it gives them a proven center who will take pressure off of Kopitar and fits perfectly into the Kings system. While, the Kings still need another goal scorer before they become one of the top three in the Western Conference. They should now get out of the first round.

Dallas Stars Notes
First post in awhile. I was going to wait until the coach was officially hired.
It's expected Glen Gulutzan will be announced as the next Dallas Stars coach, maybe as early as Friday. If it doesn't happen Friday, It will likely be next week, since I don't think the Stars would announce it on a Saturday or Sunday.
The Stars re-signed Richard Bachman and signed Cedar Park Stars defenseman Dan Spang to one year deal, two way deals.

Game Summary
Stars didn't play that good with the way they played for most of the night they are a team that doesn't deserve to make the playoffs. It all comes down now to Sunday morning's game at 11:30 am Detroit Red Wings vs Chicago Blackhawks. The Stars need the Red Wings to win the game in regulation, of course without blowing a lot of other games this season the Stars wouldn't be in this situation. Basically there is no shot actually the Red Wings are struggling and the Red Wings starting goalie has struggled against Chicago. The Red Wings offense is struggling and so far this season they haven't been able to score many goals on Corey Crawford.

It was a boring game, but the Stars at least controlled the play as they should against a team, which won't be making the playoffs. The powerplay still couldn't get on track. Up next is the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, the Stars haven't typically faired too well against the Avalanche in recent years. That will have to change if the Stars want to make the playoffs.

The Stars played better for the first two periods, then come the third period the Ducks were the better team. The Stars decided to sit back and wait for the Ducks to attack. Finally Brendan Morrow had a huge game again, the team needs to play with even better effort the final four games. Now there's some hope again for the team to make the playoffs, but they can't blow it. Just win the final four games of the regular season against non playoff teams. Columbus, Colorado, at Colorado and at Minnesota.
They're all games the team can win and if the Stars can't win all four of those games then they don't deserve to make the playoffs.

Scoring Summary
Second Period
5:28 B. Richards (26) Assists: J. Benn, A Goligoski
Game Summary
Stars didn't play well enough to win, when they had to win, the Stars scored the two Kings goals that mattered. Stars defenseman deflected pucks into their own net, the last one was a empty netter. Brad Richards played better, but he's still not in form yet coming off of the concussion. There are too many core players who aren't doing enough. The team needs to control the pace, not sit back and try to play better defensively, they're not going to score that way. Go out get a big lead, then if you want to slow it down, then do it a little bit, but with the players on the Stars roster they aren't going to win low scoring games consistently.

Game Summary
Stars started out slow in the first period, but picked up the pace in the second period after Vishnovsky scored to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. The Stars need to come out and play with that kind of pace to start games, not wait until they're down. Alex Goligoski tied the game at one on the powerplay with a rocket of a shot past Ray Emery's glove. Then in the third period the Stars took a 2-1 lead on a Loui Eriksson goal, the team proceeds to blow it 11 seconds later, then the Stars took a 3-2 lead with over 6 minutes remaining, which the Stars blew the lead with 7 seconds left in regulation. The team lost in overtime on a 2 on 1.
Kari Lehtonen looks tired, he needs to sit against the Nashville Predators, but that isn't going to happen. The Stars have to defeat the Predators on Saturday, hopefully in regulation, otherwise doubts will start lingering if this team is going to make the playoffs or not.
